Paragraph Text

Paragraph text is Rich Text Formatted (RTF) text. The Paragraph Text tool allows you to type in paragraphs of text which use multiple lines or need multiple fonts. Paragraph Text allows you to format your text as you would in any word processor. You can change fonts, margins, spacing, set tabs, superscript, subscript and color individual characters. You can have multiple font and formatting instructions within a Paragraph Text object (see below).

To create a Paragraph Text object, click where you want your text to start and begin typing. You can use normal NeXT text editing techniques to enter and edit your text.

There is a difference between applying format changes to a Paragraph Text object and to the text within the Paragraph Text object. You can apply format changes to a selection within the Paragraph Text object by highlighting a selection and then applying the changes. If you want the changes to apply to the entire text object, you can select the text box itself and then apply your formatting changes.

Hint: To edit text in a Paragraph Text object, just double click on the text block.

Font: After choosing the text tool, bring up the Font panel (Font Panel from the Font menu or Command-t) to set your font, typeface, and size. You can change the fonts of the Paragraph Text objects in one of two ways. If you want to change the font in the entire Paragraph Text object, select the text object and bring up the Font panel. If you don't set a font, your text will use the application default font (Times Roman 24).

Ruler: To access the ruler, select the text within a text object that you want to format and choose Show Ruler from the Format menu (Command-r). You now can set tabs, margins and hanging indents. These ruler formats can be edited at any time. The default setting for the left margin of Paragraph Text is set at the first point at which you click to begin entering Paragraph Text. Those running Create on OS-NT, OS-Intel and OS-Motorola will find a new justification tool available for text when the text is selected with the ruler activated. See the Advanced_Tools chapter for more information.
